The old bakery factory is reused for the new Galleria di Arte Moderna, or Modern Museum of Art, for the city of Bologna. This building is inserted into the general plan for the reuse of the area of the old tobacco factory. The theme of the urban backdrop and the park in front of it create the overall environment of the old factory and represent the public interaction with this building complex. Apart from the renovation and restoration of the facades, the intervention proposed the functional reorganization of the interiors (about 8,500 m2 of new available spaces), the demolition of all the additions made over time, and finally the rationalization of how to utilize the floors for the exhibition layout. The newly constructed walls are inserted as independent and free bodies within the old factory.
They are given the dual role of being both architectonic and semantic. They are thought of as autonomous architecture that, on one hand, give new typological relationships (i.e. foyer), and on the other, help to read the analogous reconstruction and new use of the old bread factory. The design of the building is essentially divided into two parts: the exhibition space (with 3,500 m2 of rooms and more than 1,200 m2 of storage) and the public administration area. Together they make reference to the foyer on the ground floor organized under the covered courtyard of the old factory that serves as a filter between the urban backdrop and the facing park. An autonomous staircase in the foyer gives access to the graphic library and restrooms located a half level up the stairs. Going down leads to the basement at the level of the old Via del Porto, or Port Street, where there is space for experimental shows (about 5,000 m2). This space is also connected to the formal garden of the museum. At the basement level there are didactic spaces facing the garden. Turning back to the ground floor, off the foyer is the projection room with 100 seats and an exhibition space destined for temporary shows (around 1,200 m2) developed to follow the typological structure of the main salon of the factory.
The first floor, on the other hand, has all the permanent exhibition space covering two levels (about 1,700 m2) and occupies the entire building in addition to an extension to an outdoor terrace (the roof of the foyer). The terrace is characterized by a skylight supported by the old structural beams and naturally illuminates the foyer staircase. The two exhibition floors are characterized by the presence of the large double-story central salon, corresponding to the main bakery where two original chimneys remain.
