The urban layout of Saint Truiden is typical of a Flemish town that is organized around a market square with public buildings set on residential gothic lots facing inwards.
The entire town, apart from Market Square, is a result of compact stitching together of buildings with relatively few empty spaces in between. The area to be rebuilt lies between the bastions and the boulevards, which serve as a reminder of the ancient defensive layout, the historical limits of the city, and the building lots divided by the square. For this reason, the area is particularly important as a thruway for pedestrians on Moonisce Straat and carts on the tunnel side.
